Luke 2:8-20 Teenage shepherds

Updated: Feb 19, 2021

The shepherds who worked in the vicinity of Bethlehem were mainly teenage boys and girls. As a result of poor pay and harsh conditions these young people sometimes had to resolve to dishonest ways to make ends meet. This gave them a bad name. According to old customs shepherds were not the most trustworthy people around, as witnesses they were not acceptable in a court of law. God in his mercy decided they such people should be witnesses of His coming to the world. God love the ones that are not important in the eyes of the world.

Our spiritual forefathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob were shepherds. Luke is yet again playing with images to show the real Shepherd is coming to the world to save humankind and be a trustworthy and caring shepherd for all. The current suppose to be shepherds are not caring and compassionate towards their flock.

God decided to appear and call young unimportant boys and girls into his Kingdom. They are the ones who will bring God's light to a dark and cruel world, not the arrogant leaders of our age. We can see how for instance young people are witnessing on Ticktok, it is amazing!

He has chosen you, although you may feel inadequate, to be His followers and representatives on social media today.
