Luke 1:57-80

Updated: Feb 19, 2021

Sin is your primary problem.

We have a very narrow understanding of the things that are most destructive in our lives. In fact, most of the time we do not see our biggest enemies instead we entertain them merrily on our way. Being oblivious of our challenges we end up living in oppressive circumstances.

Our passage makes it noticeably clear that the Christian faith was given to us by Jews, Christianity did not appear out of the blue or started without any previous history. As Christians we are directly connected to Abraham and we participate in the covenant God made to him. Luke uses this background to deem the armed struggle of the Jews pointless and shows us another way.

The Jewish community yearned to be freed from the Roman empire. They did not want to replace the Romans as world conquerors they only wanted to have home-rule, a type of self government that would make them free to live their life as they wanted, according to their religious beliefs and their national ambitions.

This strive eventually became a dangerous political movement in Israel. They interpreted the coming of the Messiah as the dawning of the self-government they were longing for. Luke brings this ambition of the Jews into our passage with the inclusion of a Maccabean war song, the Benedictus. He then in a brilliant way turn the whole song into a different direction, away from the armed struggle to the way of Jesus.

Luke succeeded in showing that our biggest enemy is not political or physical as they thought it was in the time of Jesus, but that it was spiritual or emotional. Sin is our biggest problem and challenge; not human beings. In Luke 1:71 he mentions our enemies and that God will save us from those who hate us but sets the record right in verse 77 when he says salvation is to be saved from sin not from an oppressive government.

In Luke 1:75 he reiterates that we should walk before God in righteousness but in verse 79 he describes the way of life as a life in the footsteps of peace.

Our biggest need in life is to be saved from sin and to live in peace. By this Luke masterfully bridged the gap between Jewish aspirations and the Christian lifestyle.

Our most important need is a merciful God who will be ready to forgive us our sins and not support our earthly aspirations and armed struggles. The prophecy of Zechariah is just that, a merciful God will be the new dawn of peace. It will be peace on a grand and magnificent scale! That merciful God has now arrived in Jesus our Lord.
